Abigail Adams was born on November 11, 1744 in Massachusetts as Abigail Smith. Although she received no formal education, like all the women of her time, she worked her to educate herself. She had a love for reading, which allowed her to be educated in many subjects. Her love for reading was shared by John Adams, whom she married in 1764. When John became president in 1797, he took Abigail's advice very seriously, and often relied on her for assistance. He once said “I never wanted your Advice and assistance more in my life…The Times are critical and dangerous, and I must have you here to assist me.” Abigail Adams showed one of the first signs of feminism and never failed to stand up for women.
